Up-front commitment to the event is a basic component of a successful campaign. Your leadership needs to lead the way and set the example. Your congregation needs to hear the pastor’s excitement and commitment from the pulpit as he encourages them to participate and sets his own expectations of success. Member commitment can take various forms, from agreeing together on a class goal to a written pledge posted on the class wall. The commitment should allow for various degrees of participation and should fit in with your theme. For instance, our World Series theme used a baseball contract form on which members could check their choices of praying for the event, attending on each Sunday during August, or contacting class members and prospects.
Involvement of as many people as possible is a key to building excitement, getting the job done, and ultimate success. Organize teams for publicity, for celebration, for welcoming, for follow-up, and for anything else you can think of. Get folks involved in planning and brainstorming early on. Plan a special kick-off event for a longer campaign with games (lead by age-group teams), refreshments (need teams for preparation, serving, and cleanup), contests, music, etc... Involve children and preschoolers with poster contests (then use posters for publicity).
But remember to keep all this activity in perspective; the most important involvement is getting each class and each member to participate in reaching out to absent members, prospect, friends, and family.
