On the Sunday after Christmas, we finish the story of Jesus’ birth as we learn about the Magi (whom you may know as “Wise Men” ) who came from a distant country in the east (perhaps Persia, which is today called Iran). They studied the stars in the heavens, and they learned from their study that one who is to be the King of the Jews was born. They brought their gifts of gold (for a king), frankincense (for a priest), and myrrh (for one who would die for all).
The magi apparently didn’t arrive until two years or so after Jesus was born—they found Mary and the baby living in a house in Bethlehem. It probably took them the two years to travel to Bethlehem after they had seen the star, which appeared right when Jesus was born. When they inquired in Jerusalem about the new King, the priests and scribes were able to tell them He would be born in Bethelehem, because of the writings of the prophet Micah.
The Magi brought gifts to the newborn King. We today can bring gifts as well, and one of the most important gifts that God loves is the worship of those who love Him. Let’s be sure to give our gift of worship to God as we thank Him for the priceless gift of His Son.
See you Sunday! We’d love to meet your friends as well.
